27/08/2017 Nako –
Tabo
Neither of us slept
well. Not sure if the altitude was to blame or the dogs howling and barking all
through the night. During the day the
dogs are as good as gold, they never chase and they never bark but they turn
into real pains in the the night and you never quite know where the noise is
coming from.

We continued to
climb out of Nako to 3800 meters but not without some excitement. The road had
been closed completely for 6 days earlier in the month but was now reopened.
However The Maling slide was still somewhat active and the sign that we see all
the time saying 'shooting stones' definitely needed heeding. Army vehicles couldn't get through because
the road was too narrow after the recent slide so they got other army vehicles
meeting them on the other side of the slide. It must have taken them ages for
the men to carry all the boxes ( the boxes we saw contained either whiskey or
life chickens) from one side to the other dodging the 'shooting stones'and not
disappearing down the slope to certain death. It was a harrowing sight and we
were pretty relieved to get safely to the other side.
The 600 meter
descent was stunning and there was hardly any traffic. We arrived in Tabo in
good time and after a bit of negotiating found a nice room with great views
very close to the Tabo Gompa which attracts lots of visitors.

There was just enough space for a car to cross but army vehicles had to
unload and reload onto other vehicles on the far side of the slide |
