22/08 17 Rampur to
Bhabunaggar
The hotel staff
kindly helped carry the bikes and bags up the 3 flights of stairs to the road
and we set off again. Another day of climbing in the heat of the valley. After
the AC of the hotel it was too hot when in the full sun and we began to dart
across the sunny sections and slow down in the shade. Three litres of water got
us to Jeori where we bought another 4.5 litres and had lunch. We hadn't seen
any non Indian people since Shimla and guessed we were always going to stick
out and as such the local bobby came over to have a chat and practice his
English. He told us that the side road we had intended to take to Sarahan was
now closed due to a landslide and advised to continue on the National highway
heading for Tapri . Probably just as well As the climb up to Sarahan was going
to be 700m with the next day descending to Jeori again which would have been
tough in the heat. As it was the cycling
was tiring enough even though we didn't climb as much and by the time we got to
Bhabunaggar we were ready to stop. Fortunately and surprisingly it had a hotel
even though as is often the case in these steep sided valleys the building are
very tall with lots of ramshackle steps and stairs which initially looked to be
too much to manage. Fortunately the man
running the hotel could see we were thinking of cycling on and people were
found to carry every thing up to our room. The town was small and impoverished
and we hadn't expected much and were pleased to find a room with a fan and
shower.

Kinnaur is known for it's steep sidede valleys. Luckily we had
help carrying the bikes up to the hotel |
 |
| Everything is still green and lush |
 |
| We hit small patches of bad road |
 |
| It can't have been easy to construct these roads |
