from Chandigarh to Kalka
In the morning we
had a lovely chapati from the street vendor. The little food stalls looked
quite romantic in the dark but in the harsh light of the morning they didn't
look quite so appealing but we had had a good night and to be honest there
didn't appear to be another choice. Once we got on our bikes we soon realised
that it was a mistake not to have gone out once with loaded bikes at home.
Going spinning every once in a while really is not good preparation for cycle
touring. The temperature showed as 38 degrees on my gadget so that didn't help
either. It took us almost 5 hours to cycle less than 20 miles and we couldn't
even claim a massive height gain. A poor show indeed. During our many stops we
met lots of friendly people though, who were all keen to chat. We had booked
tickets in the UK for the famous narrow gauge rail journey from Kalka to Shimla
and popped into the station to confirm that we could take our bikes along. Just
as well we did. The bikes had to leave on the 3 am train whereas we wouldn't
leave until 5.20 am. Fortunately they were happy to take our bikes there and
then and also the majority of our luggage. We were given a slip of paper but
that didn't do much to reassure us that we would see our belongings again in
Shimla.
